		<description>Your conservative friend&#039;s argument, like most conservative arguments, fails on numerous fronts.  The most obvious (and the only one I&#039;ll point out) is that it argues from semantics.  Marriage might be a religious concept (that&#039;s highly debatable), but in our society it is 100% secular.  There is no religious requirement whatsoever for anyone to obtain a marriage license and enter into that specific contract.  If a couple wants to marry in a church or temple or a pentagram within a circle, they can do so but unless they obtain that secular license from the state it is merely ceremony.  When your friend asserts that the state should sanction &quot;civil unions&quot; and not &quot;marriage&quot; he is playing a word game and he is purposely ignoring that marriage in the eyes of the state is secular.</description>
